1. Why is Willow publishing a financial stewardship resource?
It is a number
one need of churches. According to WCA surveys and other research,
resources to assist with stewardship teaching and training
are a primary need of leaders in the local church.
The church at large has failed to teach a balanced and comprehensive
view of the biblical wisdom concerning a person’s proper relationship
to their money. As a result, the competing theology of materialism
is capturing the minds and hearts of both Christians and non-Christians.
Consequently, bankruptcies are at a record high, savings are
at record lows and consumer debt continues to rise. Even more
significantly, peoples’ spiritual growth and development is
stifled, they fail to honor God with their finances and to
experience joy and freedom in this area of their lives.
Willow Creek has a proven ministry track record. For over
20 years, the Good $ense Ministry of Willow Creek Community
Church has been helping individuals and families by teaching
biblical financial principles and practical money management
skills. Good $ense is based on field-tested content and
proven ministry experience.
Good $ense is a key component of the WCA mission to envision,
equip and encourage the local church.

2. What is Good $ense for and what is it designed to
do?
The Good $ense resources as described
below - for church leaders (Leader's Pack), volunteer counselors
(Counselor Training), and everyone in the local church (Budget
Course).
- The Good $ense Leader's Pack (Implementation
Guide and Casting a Vision for Good $ense DVD) envision
and equip leaders to launch and lead a year-round stewardship
ministry in their church.
- The Good $ense Counselor Training Workshop Set
trains and equips laypersons to provide free, biblically-based,
confidential counsel to assist families and individuals
in addressing financial questions or difficulties.
- The Good $ense Budget Course Expanded Edition
trains everyone in the church to integrate Biblical Financial
Principles into their lives-financially and spiritually.

3. Why should a church purchase and use Good $ense instead
of something else? What makes these resources distinct?
Grace filled approach to spiritual
growth. Good $ense views an individual’s relationship
to money as a spiritual issue and an improper relationship
blocks spiritual growth and transformation. Good $ense emphasizes
grace in leading individuals into reflection and introspection
about their relationship to money, and ultimately helps remove
money as a stumbling block to spiritual growth. A grace filled
approach is also used to challenge individuals to examine
whether they are becoming more faithful in honoring God with
money, or becoming more foolish by yielding to cultural influences.
Resources are seeker friendly. Good $ense uses culturally
relevant and easily understood concepts and approaches to
integrate biblical principles about money with budgeting basics.
Good $ense resources are also flexible so they can be taught
in various formats and can be adapted to teach and train a
variety of ministry groups.
Delivered through the local church. Good $ense equips
local churches to minister directly to their congregations
and communities by establishing a church-wide, year-round
ministry. Rather than sending teachers and trainers to lead
workshops and courses, we want to empower the local church
to teach, train and care for their congregations in this area
of financial stewardship.

4. How does Good $ense compare with other Willow Creek
curriculum such as Becoming a Contagious Christian, An Ordinary
Day with Jesus, and Network?
Like other WCA Resources,
the Good $ense Curriculum:
- Includes everything needed to effectively teach the courses.
- Helps equip the local church teacher to teach the courses.
- Utilizes a variety of teaching and learning styles-lecture,
video, individual activities, partner activities, small
group activities-to maximize adult learning.
- Has been comprehensively field tested. Course teaching,
activities, and video segments have all been reworked and
refined based on the input of hundreds of participants.
We know it works!

5. How many people will one set of resources serve?
- Both courses can be effectively taught to virtually any
size group. At Willow Creek Community Church, the Good $ense
Budget Course has been taught to groups of over 1,000. It
has also been taught at other churches with as few as ten
participants. The Good $ense Counselor Training Workshop
typically has fewer participants (five to twenty-five) as
it is designed to train a select group of volunteers who
will serve as Good $ense counselors.
- Churches also need to purchase Participant's Guides
for every individual attending a course. Efforts have
been made to keep Participant Guide costs as low as feasible
and we recommend churches pass the cost on to the participants.
- A church teaching courses multiple times throughout the year would
only need to purchase additional Participant's Guides.

6. Can churches purchase the individual
course components or do they need the kit?
- All components can be purchased individually.
- We encourage churches to purchase both courses.
Doing this will enable you to launch an effective stewardship
ministry and to present the courses as they were designed
to be presented.
- Our experience is that churches that purchase only the
Budget Course find there is also a need for additional
help and counsel for some individuals and are then inclined
to purchase the Counselor Training Course.

7. Who should teach the Good $ense Budget Course and Good
$ense Counselor Training Workshop?
- A fundamental value of all Willow Creek Resources curriculum
is to make the local church teacher a "hero" by
giving them everything they need to effectively teach the
course. In this sense, anyone can teach the Budget Course
and the Counselor Training Workshop. The Implementation
Guide includes ministry position descriptions describing
the ideal characteristics and skills for Good $ense teachers
and recommends that teachers be part of an ongoing Good
$ense Ministry in the church.
- The Leader's Guides for both the Budget Course and Counselor
Training Workshop include complete scripts for the courses.
If the local church teacher wanted to, he or she could literally
stand up and read the Leader's Guide to present the course
(we hope they won't, but they could!).
- In addition to the teaching text, every page spread in
the Leader's Guides includes:
- Minutes allowed for every section to help the teacher
stick to the time allowed
- PowerPoint slides indicating when each slide should
be shown
- PowerPoint "button" symbols indicating
the teacher should press their control button to bring
up the next item on slides that "build"
- Arrow icons indicating text that needs to be spoken
verbatim by the teacher because the text appears in
the Participant's Guide
- Room to write notes so the teacher can adapt the
content with their own stories and illustrations
- A copy of the Participant's Guide page(s) corresponding
to what the teacher is presenting

TOP
9. What is the best format for presenting the Good $ense
Budget Course?
The course includes six, fifty-minute sessions totaling approximately
five hours of content. It can be effectively presented in
several formats:

10. Do married couples each need a copy of the Participant
Guide, or can they share one copy?
In order to easily follow the teaching and be able to make
personal notes throughout the class, we suggest that each
participant have their own Participant Guide. However, we
recommend that married couples work together on a single copy
of the Pre-Work and in developing their Spending Plan during
the Budget Course.
